GFI Training Course

Analysis Practices with UML

The United State Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) started in 2000 an ambitious IT project aiming at replacing all their existing applications. It was then called CVF for « Virtual Case File Management System). The project was officially scrapped in 2005 causing more than $100 million loss.

According to Gartner, as few as 25% of all IT projects reach their financial objectives, deadlines or quality criteria. Obviously CVF was not part of these.

In order to help organisations in achieving better IT projects GFI has decided to bundle best of breed analysis practices into a pragmatic training course that combines theory and hands-on exercises. By the end of this “Analysis Practices with UML” course, participants will be able to produce detailed specifications for a large variety of IT projects.

Throughout the course, extensive use will be made of diagramming techniques offered by UML®, the OMG’s Unified Modeling Language™.

The course will be divided into 8 three-hour evenings sessions that cover the following themes:

  • Introduction to analysis challenges
  • Understanding the business context of the project
  • Formalising the required functionality
  • Formalising the underlying information model
  • Formalising business rules that have to be applied
  • Formalising user interactions
  • Formalising processes and lifecycles
  • Documenting functional specifications and technical constraints
